“Black Haiku Friday” is a series of haikus by Bulgarian poet Vlady Hristov published by Starshel (“Hornet”) newspaper as part of its mission to showcase the funniest critical voices and the most critical humor in contemporary Bulgaria.
Founded in 1946, Starshel is the oldest continuously published newspaper in the country. Apart from social poetry, its offerings include satirical analyses, jokes, and cartoons. Its often-biting humor provides timely criticism of our society, political elites, and the economic situation in the country. This is why it’s a great gift for anyone who finds humor therapeutic and intelligent criticism vital to the health of a democracy.
Several community centers and schools in Bulgaria will receive Starshel subscriptions courtesy of Lenko Lenkov, program director for Civil Society and Democratic Institutions at the America for Bulgaria Foundation.
